Collective Gardens Project

Publication date: September 2nd, 2008

The collective gardens by the side of our building and on our second floor terrasse were a great success this summer. Under the wonderful coordination of Heather Elliott from A.C.S.A., many citizens participated in the planning, planting, nurturing and harvesting of these beautiful gardens, while forming bonds of friendship and learning about urban agriculture. Soil tests were undertaken by the McGill Natural Resources Sciences Department on our side garden which we have used only for decorative perennials due to uncertainty about the state of the soil. Plans are now underway to experiment with phytoremediation, planting techniques to regenerate and detoxify the soil over time. We also plan on building raised beds in that area so that we can safely grow fruits and vegetables in that space. A harvest party is planned for September 20th from 10:00 – 3:00. All gardeners and Saint Columba House volunteers are welcome. R.S.V.P.
